What I Learned from the World Cup
July 14, 2010 [by Larry Chao]
Teamwork trumps ego. Spain won because it played beautiful teamwork. Yes, there were individual stars but non of them really stood out as much as the overall play and the victory.
The Netherlands also played well - a bit violent - but even their rough tactics and the individual brilliance of their stars such as Robben could not overcome the smooth, well oiled precision Spanish machine.
This is a lesson for all organizations that aspire to outstanding performance. They must practice, emphasize and reward teamwork. Individual effort is important and people also need to be recognized and rewarded appropriately.
But once individual effort becomes more important than teamwork; once ego trumps working together and getting the best out of all; the overall company risks failing.
